Obituary for Helen Ruth Cleveland (Wilcher)

Helen Ruth Cleveland (Wilcher)
Helen Ruth Cleveland, age 89, passed away in her home in Clovis, NM, surrounded by her family and friends on May 31, 2018. She was born March 7, 1929, in Dora, NM, to Horace and Carrie (Turner) Wilcher. Helen worked at Howard’s Drug in 1945 where she met her husband, Felix Cleveland. They were married in 1951. She and her husband moved to Texas and opened their own business in 1955. In 1957, the Cleveland’s moved to Palmdale, CA, and opened Cleve’s Automotive, a business that operated for 45 years. In 2002, Felix and Helen moved to Clovis, NM, where they spent their remaining years together. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church, and she cherished her church family.

Helen deeply loved serving her community in numerous capacities. She served in the offices of president, vice president, secretary, and parliamentarian of various philanthropic clubs and organizations from 1986 to 2014.

Helen’s hobby was music, and she drew great joy from sharing that gift with others throughout her lifetime. For many years, she served as the children’s music director for her church in California. She gave three musical organs to different families so they might learn to play. Helen also worked with children, helping them to learn and memorize the books of the Bible.

Helen is survived by her son Jerry Hamlin (Melinda) and her grandsons Seth (Kelly) and Adam Hamlin, all of Springfield, OR; her sisters Hazel (W.B.) Jernigan of Spokane, WA, Jayne (Clyde) Golding of Lubbock, TX, and Gracie Wilcher of Lubbock, TX; her five great-grandchildren, Kai, Sofia Rose, Rowan, Mason, and Arabella; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Felix, her parents, H.B. and Carrie Wilcher, her sisters, Juanita (Edward) Jernigan and Betty (Leroy) Taylor, and her brothers, Calvin “Pete,” Bobby, and Donald Joe “Spook” (Ina) Wilcher.
