Obituary for Chester Yerby

Chester Yerby
Chester Yerby passed from this life Friday, June 22, 2018 at his home in Muleshoe at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 27 days. He was born February 25, 1931 in Stratford, Texas to B.B. and Myrtle (Yarborough) Yerby. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Chester grew up and attended school in Plainview, Texas. At the age of 17, he joined th U.S. Navy and sailed from San Diego, California through the Panama Canal to Norfolk, Virginia where he completed his tour of duty. Returning home to Plainview, he deepened a lifelong friendship with the love of his life, Elinor Ferrell. They were married October 12, 1951 in Plainview. They were happily married for 66 years. In 1954, they moved with their daughter, Lee Ann, to Muleshoe and after a short time, Chester went to work for the local Gulf Oil Distributorship owned by Dub Finn. He worked there for 41 years under the ownership of Mr. Finn, John Smith and finally, Gary Dale, all of whom became treasured friends. He and Elinor made their home and lifelong friends in the community. Chester is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, B.B. Yerby, Jr., J.W. Yerby, Howard Yerby, Ralph Yerby and Jerry Yerby.

Chester is survived by his wife, Elinor; his daughter and son-in-law, Lee Ann and Larry Baker, his granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer and David Ingle, his grandson and his wife, Jeffrey and Candice Baker; six beloved great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Lauren, Cameron and Stephen Ingle, and Cosette and Alice Baker; two sisters, Frances Nelson and Jolene Taylor; a brother, Danny Yerby; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Chester is remembered for his gentle spirit, kind heart, warm smile, winning laugh, his love for Elinor and most of all as “the Papa”. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to First Baptist Church in Muleshoe, PO Box 483, Muleshoe, Texas, 79347 or The Oneita Wagnon Senior Center, PO Box 292, Muleshoe, Texdas, 79347 or the charity of your choice.
